Some love stories don’t tiptoe in — they arrive with intention and stay for good. Julie and Kate met at work, as so many couples do, but Kate knew immediately that Julie was Ms Right. So she did what any quietly determined romantic would do: arranged the same lunch breaks, built a friendship, and waited patiently while love caught up. And when it did, it was monumental — expanding to include their children, their families, and every corner of their shared lives.
With theatrical backgrounds and a deep love of storytelling, Julie and Kate wanted a wedding day full of pomp and circumstance and unapologetic fun. A themed celebration at Ballarat’s Kryal Castle was the perfect fit. From the moment guests arrived, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a “sit quietly and behave” kind of wedding. Everyone leaned into the theme wholeheartedly — and honestly, that kind of enthusiasm is our absolute favourite. As soon as they booked with us, I ordered outfits for our entire team too. When a couple commits to a theme, we commit right alongside them.
With a theatrical seamstress in the family, the wedding party’s attire was always going to be something special. Opulent fabrics, dramatic silhouettes, and exquisite attention to detail brought the medieval fantasy to life. I’ll admit it — I was more than a little jealous of those skills and made a mental note to dust off my own sewing machine as soon as I got home.
The chapel on the castle grounds was transformed with home-grown flowers that had been planned and planted specifically for this day. Inspired by medieval gardens, the blooms felt rich, intentional, and deeply personal. Hiring the Side by Side Weddings bird cages and candles was the finishing touch, with our set up and pack down service taking the stress out of gorgeous decorations, tying the ceremony space and bridal party table together beautifully and elevating the entire atmosphere without losing its warmth.
Now, was the day perfect? Absolutely — and real life still happened. A celebrant fell ill and, despite trying desperately to recover, had to arrange a replacement just hours before the ceremony. Enter the stand-in celebrant, who was nothing short of superb. And with a name like Pamela Anderson, laughter was always going to be part of the magic. Love, humour, and a room full of support carried Julie and Kate into forever in the most memorable way.
To keep the medieval spirit alive, Kryal Castle delivered entertainment that had guests completely enchanted. A traditional pantomime kicked things off, and this theatrical crowd did not hold back — cheering the heroes and booing the villain with joyful abandon. The first dance, beautifully choreographed to ABBA’s Dancing Queen (yes, the puns were plentiful), was followed by medieval dance lessons that had everyone on the floor, tripping the light fantastic.
The evening closed with a daring fire-twirling performance before the party continued well into the night. And the next morning? Let’s just say there were plenty of sunglasses, sore heads, and laughter over breakfast — especially convenient with the brand new caravan park right on the doorstep, which many of the guests, and myself took advantage of.
You’ll notice that these galleries mix colour and black and white images together. That’s not an accident. We deliver every single photo in both colour and black and white so our couples can choose what speaks to them most. Some moments shine in colour, rich with atmosphere and detail. Others land deeper in black and white, where emotion takes centre stage.
This is the order Julie and Kate chose — the way their story felt right to them — and we love giving couples that freedom.
If you’re a country couple dreaming of a wedding that feels true to you — whether that’s medieval magic, farmyard romance, modern city chic, a nature grounded elopement, or something entirely your own — we’d love to be part of your story. We travel all over Victoria and don’t charge travel fees within the state, because love doesn’t live only in the city, and neither do we.
Your wedding doesn’t have to follow the rules. It just has to feel like you.
And we’ll be there, cameras in hand, ready to capture every bit of it.
