How do you define success?
For many small business owners, it’s making a healthy profit — and that’s great, because staying in business means helping more people with your product or service. But for Side by Side Weddings Victoria, it’s a little different. As a wedding service, we don’t really expect much repeat business (in fact, we secretly hope we don’t get it — it means our service lasts a lifetime).
That’s why Jackie and Peter’s enquiry meant so much to us. Two years earlier, we’d been part of her daughter Bianca’s wedding to Mitchell, helping them celebrate in style during the pandemic. When Jackie called to say she wanted us to help with her own wedding, it really was the ultimate compliment.
Taking advantage of our advice to have a first look, Peter quipped that it meant he got to spend more time with Jackie, and when I prompted them to really drink in each other's smiles and be VERY romantic, his response was 'that's just Tuesday to me".

After the ceremony, everyone strolled across the road to the parklands, popped champagne, and soaked in that just-married glow. Then, it was into the limo and off to the city — Bar 88 at Melbourne Skydeck for cocktails and cake. The view was unbeatable, and so were the photos — especially the ones taken on The Edge, complete with Ed Sheeran’s fireworks lighting up the background.
The speeches had us laughing one moment and tearing up the next. Peter’s New Zealand family spoke with such joy about him finding love again, while Jackie’s eldest son had the room roaring when he began with, “When Mum said she was going on a date with someone from the internet, I had concerns…”
The night ended on a high with a Dirty Dancing–inspired first dance, followed by a packed dance floor of happy, smiling faces. When we quietly slipped out, we knew the celebration was going to keep going long into the night.
